Swapping steel tape reels for 30 m braided line on a cheap kite winder has been our most durable upgrade for volunteer transects, @Ravi. About $12, it floats and survives sandy entries — metal reels seized by day two; tie a knot every meter if you need exact distances. For initial assessments, a 0.5 m PVC quadrat clipped to the winder means nothing gets dropped.
Quick example: we’ve had the best luck with thin polycarbonate slates with a 1 cm printed edge and plain grease pencils — easy for new volunteers to read in low viz and they’ve shrugged off rocky entries; only caveat is they scratch, so a quick toothpaste buff keeps them clear, @jenkins_anna92.
We started issuing $6 wrist slates with pre-printed transect codes to new volunteers, so they can keep both hands free and still check the plan — like a grocery list on your forearm. For longer notes we still carry one shared slate per buddy team, since wrist slates are lousy for detailed counts. If you try it, add a short bungee tether; we lost one to surge on day one, @Ravi.
